The following ‘poem’ was first published in the High Kirk Quarterly Magazine nearly 70 years ago in July 1956 (Rev Sidney Adamson).
Ten little church folk went to church when fine;
But it started raining, and then there were nine.
Nine little church folk stayed up very late;
One overslept himself, then there were eight.
Eight little church folk, on the road to heaven,
One joined a rambling club, and then there were seven.
Seven little church folk, heard of Sunday “flicks”;
One thought he’d like to go, and then there were six.
Six little church folk, kept the place alive;
One bought a TV set, then there were five.
Five little church folk seemed loyal to the core,
Minister upset one, then there were four.
Four little church folk argued heatedly
Over ceremonial, then there were three.
Three little church folk sang the service through,
Got a hymn they didn’t know, then there were two.
Two little church folk disputed who should run
the next parish concert, then there was one.
… nothing changes …
