Not buses this time – but pianos!
In September 2015 when the Pavilion closed for refurbishment (initial time-scale of approximately two years) the “town piano” needed a safe storage space. The late Lyn Bulloch, organist at Trinity Church, negotiated with the Council and Trinity became the ‘temporary’ custodians of the beautiful grand piano.
The congregation benefited by having use of the piano during worship. Bute Arts Society, the charity which brings live music to the island, also used the piano, paying for it to be professionally tuned before each concert.
At the union of the Trinity and UCB congregations in 2024 the piano was moved to the new Isle of Bute Parish Church in the former UCB building.
Looking to the future, when the Pavilion finally reopens its doors and the piano has to be returned to its rightful owners, Bute Arts Society organised a very successful financial appeal and raised enough money to purchase a replacement instrument to be housed in the Isle of Bute Parish Church, and available to anyone using the sanctuary.
Last week a second magnificent grand piano was delivered and the two instruments are sitting shoulder to shoulder in the sanctuary. Contact has been made with the Pavilion management to discuss the logistics and timescale for the “town piano” being returned to its original home in the Pavilion.
… in the meantime, we have two … (pianos, not buses).
